VFD Preventative Maintenance

Ensuring Proper VFD Programming

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are often found lacking the correct programming or protection settings for their specific applications. At SEEL, we have extensive experience working with nearly every VFD manufacturer across a wide range of applications. We ensure that all setpoints and protective measures are properly configured to safeguard your assets—including the VFD, motor, filters, cables, and the load. Incorrect or missing setpoints can significantly reduce the lifespan of your equipment. We also verify that settings remain unchanged after installation and continue to meet the needs of the application.

Hardware Assessment

Inspecting VFD components is essential for extending equipment lifespan and supporting effective predictive maintenance. Using specialized testing procedures and infrared inspections, SEEL can identify and resolve issues before they lead to failures or unplanned downtime. We perform detailed testing of the VFD’s DC bus, diode bridge, and capacitors to detect potential failure points in advance. Our inspections also cover the entire cabinet and drive system, including checks for loose connections (which can cause erratic performance), heat sinks, internal and external fans, cabinet heating, and cleanliness of filters. One of the most common causes of VFD malfunction is inadequate cooling—our thorough maintenance helps prevent overheating and shutdowns.

Proper Documentation

Maintaining proper documentation is essential for long-term system reliability. During our initial inspection, SEEL generates a detailed report outlining all existing parameter that are set in the unit. In the event of a failure, the existing parameter setpoints are often not available. Having a saved copy of the original VFD program significantly streamlines replacement and reinstallation, allowing for a seamless transition to a new unit. Without this backup, technicians must manually analyze the control wiring and system logic to recreate the correct setpoints, which is time-consuming. Additionally, we document the VFD manufacturer and specifications which helps clients develop a critical spare parts list and maintain accurate records for all installed drives.

Application Assessment

A SEEL representative will evaluate each VFD to ensure it is operating within its intended parameters. This includes reviewing voltage levels, motor load, motor protection setpoints, and past fault history to identify any recurring issues or application-specific anomalies. These assessments help safeguard all connected equipment. We also review the filtering requirements for each installation—missing or incorrect filters can contribute to premature equipment failure, problems with the power system, and increased utility costs.

MANY MANUFACTORS SPECIFY THAT VFD’S CAN LAST UP TO 200 000 HOURS, WITH PROPER MAINTENANCE MANY UNITS CAN ACHIEVE THAT LIFE SPAN.
